Pentel product package process

Original Pentel product packaging
Pentel's brand guidelines emphasize self expression and individuality. Most of their products do not reflect this. The new pencil lead packaging should reflect self expression. I would like to redesign the lead packaging to reflect high school students in their self expression as students. The concept will be conveyed in relatable images being placed on the box.

The packaging will be more environmentally friendly and sturdy, which is better for the environment. The design will be relatable for students which will adhere to brand guides.
Process
I wanted something that is compact and easy to travel with. The other design is compact, but the shape does not fit easily in a bag or backpack. This new design will be able to be thrown in a bag without taking up extra space. The material of choice will be cardboard so that the packaging will be eco friendly.
I created sketches and played with mockups. When ready, I went to the computer to play with digitized patterns and die-lines.

I started by making the box mockups and some patterns. The patterns were made from box sketches and the Pentel logo being cut up and put together.
From there I used my high school concept to create appealing images for students. I combined my pattern pieces and the images to create a box design.
After revisiting my original ideas, I chose to focus even more on the high school aspect and redesigned the box to feature high school activities.

Final Product
The final product design is drastically different from the original idea. When I started I was thinking of trying to make images that were silhouetted so that the were easier to relate to. I also wanted to project common dreams that teenagers have during the high school years of life. The shapes were intended to create a flow and interest in the design aside from the static images.

In the end I created a school centered idea in which high school themes such as sports are the focus of the design. Motivational slogans are effective at recreating the school feeling. The words on the box dance around the image in order to create energy in the design. The simple color pallet of red and black mirrors high school colors. On the brown paper the colors will seem more muted so they will seem to be part of the design.
